ekomia was founded with the ambition to create affordable, high-quality furniture from renewable materials – with an uncompromising approach to design.
Our passion for responsible action is stronger than ever. Faced with global challenges, we are convinced: new products can only be developed responsibly when ecological responsibility is considered from the very beginning.
The following principles reflect how we understand design – and guide us in the development of new products.
Design for Lifecycle
Our responsibility for a product begins at its creation and extends to the end of its life. We consider every step in the process – from materials and manufacturing to packaging and transport. Our furniture is made to stay with you as long as possible. What comes after is something we think about at the design stage: we choose materials that can be repaired, restored, or re-entered into a new cycle.
Design for Materials
We want to work with high-quality, natural materials and let their beauty speak in our designs – rather than taking them for granted. Materials that come from nature evolve over time: they gain character, feel good to the touch, and make products last longer.
Design for Future
Our ambition doesn't stop at where we are today. We continually seek new materials, production methods, and approaches to keep improving our products in terms of both materials and manufacturing. A forward-looking mindset is, for us, an essential part of good design.
Design for Functionality
We believe in designing fit for purpose furniture and that there is beauty in a well performed function. Interacting with our products should be a smooth and even joyful experience, performed reliably and consistently.
Design for Beauty
We want to create timeless objects that don't follow short-lived trends. The things we live with shape our surroundings – and we are convinced that aesthetic, high-quality products enrich our quality of life. Enduring beauty is, for us, a distinct aspect of responsible design.
Design for Quality
We know that for a product to be long lasting it must be one of quality and that good quality is visible. It reflects a holistic approach to design and attention to detail. We use our knowledge and that of our manufacturing partners to produce high quality products that are improved over time using customer feedback.
Design that is Ethical
Responsible design considers both the environment and the people who make our products. Fair pay and safe working conditions should be a given at every stage of development. We work with carefully selected partners and pay close attention to quality and provenance when choosing materials.
Design for Cohesion
We want our pieces to fit in your home harmoniously. That they enhance your life easily without struggle or demanding attention. That they function effortlessly and beautifully but do not take focus away from the life that goes on around them.
Design with Personality
We want your new piece of furniture to nearly feel like part of the family, that it fulfils its purpose but also has personality and character of its own that can bring happiness to your life. After all, we hope that you will live with it for many years to come and therefore it should be a good roommate.
Design for Joy
We want our designs to be approachable and not so overly serious. We believe there is room to take responsibility for making a sustainable product while leaving space for lightness and play. Joy in both the creation and use of the product.
