A futon bed is a particularly low bed in which the mattress rests on a flat wooden frame – usually without a traditional headboard or with a very low backrest. The term comes from Japan, where people traditionally sleep on thin mats placed directly on the floor. The Japanese sleep culture: The origin of the futon bed

The futon bed originates from Japan. The concept of sleeping close to the floor is particularly popular and widespread there. The spiritual idea behind it: the proximity to the ground brings a sense of closeness to the earth – and ultimately to nature. In Shintoism, Japan’s original religion, nature is deeply revered and plays a central role.

To avoid lying directly on the hard floor, the Japanese use a low-lying base similar to a mattress, along with a duvet. These wafer-thin bedding pads (Japanese: Shiki-Buton) are typically filled with cotton. The duvet (Japanese: Kake-Buton) is also usually made from cotton. At the very bottom lies a rice straw mat, commonly known here as a Tatami mat.

Bed vs. Futon Bed: What's the difference?

A futon bed is the European interpretation of the traditional Japanese bed. It combines sleeping comfort with a low-lying construction. It typically includes a low bed frame, slatted base and mattress. The mattress usually sits prominently above the bed frame, giving the bed an elegant silhouette.

What you’ll often look for in vain is the headboard: many futon-style bed models come only with the characteristic frame. This draws attention to the minimalist exterior. Another advantage: these low beds without a headboard fit wonderfully under sloping ceilings – even when the knee wall is especially low.

But take note: due to their low height, futon beds aren’t exactly known for being easy to get in and out of. In the morning, you won’t just roll out of bed – you’ll need to lift yourself up.

Most older people struggle with futon beds. For the elderly, we recommend beds with what’s known as comfort height. These are often up to 50 cm off the floor and make getting up significantly easier.

Mattresses and Slatted Bases in a Futon Bed

Special mattresses or slatted bases are not required for a futon bed. These low-lying beds are designed for everyday use in European homes, so standard bedding accessories will fit.

Due to the slim frame, the insert depth is not very large, and the mattress tends to protrude noticeably from the frame. Want to calculate how far your mattress will stick out? Use this simple formula:

Slatted base height + mattress height - insert depth = mattress overhang

Good to know: Japanese futon mattresses are typically much firmer than conventional natural mattresses.
