Calmer nights with co-sleeping

Especially if you are still breastfeeding your child at night, you will get more sleep with a family bed: You don't have to get up every time to get to your baby's bed. Your child lies next to you according to the concept of co-sleeping and you can feed it directly. This way, you not only benefit from more sleep, but also from a balanced breastfeeding routine.

As another option, you can of course position the baby or children's bed on the side of the parents' bed. Just like with a family bed, such a additional bed gives you the option of flexibly arranging your sleeping space. However, a shared lying surface definitely leaves more room for cuddling.

What size do I need?

The size of the bed influences whether your family feels comfortable in it. Fortunately, family beds come in many different variants. But which bed width makes sense? Many couples use beds that are 140 cm, 160 cm or 180 cm wide - the standard length is 200 cm.

With two children who should also find room in your family bed, a minimum width of 240 cm is recommended. What counts here is the individual need for sufficient space for a healthy sleep: if you like it bigger, you should rather go for 270 cm wide family beds.

The choice of the right mattress is also linked to your wishes as a family: You can either complement the bed with individual narrow mattresses or with one large and one small mattress. This also depends on whether different degrees of firmness are preferred in the family or whether you prefer to do without a visitor's crack.

What else you should know

To ensure that all family members feel comfortable on the large sunbathing lawn, you should clarify a few aspects in advance: Who should sleep where in the bed? Which mattress is suitable for you? If there is no fall-out protection, the adults should sleep on the outer edge of the family bed. However, such a protection can easily be attached to your bed afterwards.

Especially if you want to accommodate an infant in your bed, it makes sense to choose a hard mattress: This way you protect your child from lying down awkwardly at night. At the same time, you as parents do not sink in too deeply - reducing the risk of rolling onto the baby.
