The term originates from Japan, where people traditionally sleep on thin mats directly on the floor. The futon bed has its origins in Japan. Particularly the concept of sleeping close to the ground is popular and widespread there. From the perspective of Shintoism – the original Japanese religion – this is something to strive for. There, the veneration of nature holds a high significance.

To avoid lying on the hard floor, people in Japan use a low base, reminiscent of a mattress, and a duvet. These paper-thin bed pads (Japanese: Shiki-Buton) usually have a cotton filling. The duvet (Japanese: Kake-Buton) is also mostly made of cotton. At the very bottom lies a rice straw mat, which is also known in this country as a Tatami.

Bed vs. Futon Bed: These are the Differences

A futon bed is the European interpretation of the Japanese sleeping place. It combines sleeping comfort with a construction close to the ground. Included are a low bed frame, slatted frame, and mattress. The mattress stands for the most part above the bed frame. This lends the overall appearance of the bed a sophisticated note.

What you often look for in vain is the headboard: many bed models in a futon look are only equipped with the characteristic frame. This draws the eye to the minimalist exterior. Another advantage: such low beds without a headboard fit wonderfully under sloping ceilings – even if the knee wall is particularly low.

Want even more advantages? Futon beds take up little visual space. Thus, they are not too dominant even in a compact bedroom. At the same time, they open up diverse possibilities for interior design.

Few seniors get along well with futon beds. Especially for the older generation, beds in so-called comfort height are recommended. They are often up to 50 cm off the ground and thus facilitate getting up.

Are you particularly tall? Then it is worth taking a look at wooden beds in special lengths. Recently, we have also started carrying bed sides in 220 cm length. This allows you to literally stretch out and sleep relaxed.

Mattresses and Slatted Frames for a Futon Bed

Special mattresses and slatted frames are not necessary for a futon bed. Since the beds close to the ground are designed for use in local regions, standard accessories also fit into the bed.

Due to the narrow frame, the insertion depth is not particularly large and the mattress may protrude disproportionately far from the bed frame. How to calculate the height that your mattress stands out? With this rule of thumb:

Height of slatted frame + Height of mattress - Insertion depth = Protrusion of the mattress

Good to know: Japanese futon mattresses are usually significantly harder than common natural mattresses.
