Quieter Nights Through Co-Sleeping

Especially if you are still breastfeeding your child at night, a family bed helps you get more sleep: you don't have to get up every time to get to your baby's bed. Your child lies next to you according to the concept of co-sleeping and you can feed them directly. In this way, you benefit not only from more sleep but also from a balanced breastfeeding routine.

As a further option, you can of course also position the baby or child's bed at the side of the parents' bed. Just like with a family bed, such a side bed gives you the option to flexibly design your space for sleeping. However, a shared sleeping surface definitely leaves more room for cuddling.

More Space with Family Beds

Days full of action with a child? Many parents then long for a good portion of sleep. But the nights do not always turn out to be so restful. Especially when the offspring sleep in the bed with you. What initially sounds like space problems and lack of sleep is hardly an issue with a family bed anymore.

Depending on individual needs, comfortable and, above all, large lying areas can be put together, where you as a family find sufficient space for sleeping. You choose the size of the family bed according to your personal requirements: depending on how many children sleep in the bed, you choose between different bed widths.

How Large Are Family Beds?

The size of the bed influences whether your family feels comfortable in it. But which bed width makes sense? The most common sizes are:

• 240x200 cm – ideal for two adults + toddler (2x 120 cm mattress)
• 270x200 cm – for four people with 3x 90 cm mattresses or 1x 180 cm mattress and 1x 90 cm mattress
• 280x200 cm – e.g. with 1x 140 + 1x 160 cm mattress
• 300x200 cm – never a lack of space again – e.g. 1x 180 cm and 1x 120 cm mattress

In addition, there are countless variants and combinations.

With two children who are also to find space in your family bed, a minimum width of 240 cm is recommended. Here, the individual need for sufficient space for a restful sleep counts above all: those who like it larger should rather fall back on 270 cm wide family beds.

The choice of the right mattress is also linked to your wishes as a family: you can complement the bed either with individual narrow mattresses or with one large and one small mattress. This also depends on whether different levels of firmness are preferred in the family or if you prefer to avoid a "visitor's gap".

What Else You Should Know

To ensure that all family members feel comfortable, you should clarify a few aspects in advance: who should sleep where in the bed? Which mattress is suitable for you? If no fall-out protection is present, the adults should sleep on the outer edge of the family bed. However, such protection can also be easily attached to your bed afterwards.

Especially if you want to accommodate an infant in your bed, it makes sense to choose a firm mattress: this protects your child from lying in an unfavourable position at night. At the same time, you as parents do not sink in too deep – this reduces the risk of rolling onto the baby.

Assemble your family bed from two widths between 90 and 200 cm. When the children need their own bed, the large bed can be easily reduced or transformed into two full-fledged design beds with the "1-to-2" expansion – for example, into a double bed for the parents and a single bed for the child, or into two 120 or 140 beds for the children until adulthood.
