Climate Action Plan
ekomia designs and sells solid wood furniture exclusively online – direct to customers in Germany and Europe. For us, climate action is not a promise for the future, but a decision we make every day when choosing materials, logistics partners, and energy sources.
This page documents our climate action plan in accordance with B Corp Standard CA 2.1 and our voluntary corporate carbon footprint for the financial year 2025.
1. Our 1.5°C Commitment
ekomia is committed to the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This commitment guides our decisions in material sourcing, energy supply, logistics, and packaging.
2. Our Carbon Footprint 2025
We have calculated a corporate carbon footprint (CCF) for the financial year 2025 – based on the GHG Protocol using a spend-based Scope 3 methodology (SME Climate Hub Small Business Carbon Calculator v2.0).
97.2% of this is attributable to purchased goods and services (Scope 3.1).
| Scope / Category | t CO₂e | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Scope 1 – Direct emissions (refrigerants) | 0.06 | <0.1% |
| Scope 2 – Electricity (location-based) | 3.20 | 1.0% |
| Scope 2 – District heating (office) | 0.59 | 0.2% |
| Scope 3.1 – Purchased goods and services | 324.91 | 97.2% |
| Scope 3.2 – Capital goods | 0.85 | 0.3% |
| Scope 3.3 – Fuel- and energy-related activities | 3.17 | 0.9% |
| Scope 3.5 – Waste | 0.02 | <0.1% |
| Scope 3.6 – Business travel | 0.15 | <0.1% |
| Scope 3.7 – Employee commuting | 1.26 | 0.4% |
| Total | 334 t CO₂e | 100% |
Methodology: spend-based emission factors (EEIO method), GHG Protocol. Results are estimates with inherent methodological uncertainty.
3. Where Are Our Levers?
The results are clear: 97% of our emissions do not arise in our own operations, but in the supply chain – in the production of the furniture we source from certified manufacturing partners across Europe. Our direct operational emissions (electricity, heating, office) are comparatively small.
This means the most effective action must target where emissions actually occur: material selection, the production efficiency of our suppliers, and logistics.
4. Our Actions and Targets
| Area | Target | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Material certification | FSC-, PEFC- or GOTS-certified share of renewable materials ≥ 88% of purchase value | Ongoing (annual review) |
| Electricity | 100% of office electricity from certified renewable energy | Current – maintained |
| Parcel shipping | Customer parcel shipments via DHL GoGreen or equivalent certified low-emission service | Current – maintained |
| Furniture logistics | Regular sustainability review with furniture freight partners (fleet, energy sourcing) | Triennial from 2026 |
| Packaging | FSC/PEFC-certified or recycled packaging to ≥ 95% of all packaging units | Year 3 (2028) |
| Packaging CO₂ compensation | CO₂ compensation for all product packaging through a certified partnership | Ongoing |
| Supplier dialogue | Regular sustainability reviews with all major suppliers (products, packaging, energy) | Triennial from 2026 |
5. Stakeholder Engagement
- Suppliers: Regular dialogue on certification standards (FSC, PEFC, GOTS), packaging improvements, and energy sourcing.
- Customers: Transparent communication about material origin, certifications, and climate commitments on ekomia.de.
- Logistics partners: Selection based on sustainability criteria; ongoing review of service terms.
- B Lab: Annual B Impact Assessment update and recertification every three years.
