In times when bad news dominates, it matters to us not to overlook the good. Today we would like to introduce you to an organisation that manages to bring together education, research, and innovative technology.
everwave was founded in 2016 with the goal of permanently cleaning rivers and their estuaries, and in doing so protecting the world's oceans from pollution. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans and disrupt their ecological balance. And that is where everwave comes in.
Action based on a 4-pillar strategy: Detect – Collect – Recycle – Inspire
In collaboration with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, everwave demonstrates how AI can be put to meaningful use. The algorithm effectively identifies pollution hotspots and provides additional information about the type of waste involved and the appropriate clean-up measures.
For the collection of waste, everwave uses dedicated collection boats. These gather waste with the help of additional barriers, preventing it from reaching the oceans.
The collected waste is recycled at local recycling facilities, with the aim of reintegrating as many recyclable materials as possible back into the material cycle.
Even more important, however, is raising awareness among those responsible for the pollution. Through events, community engagement, and public communication, everwave creates visibility for the challenges involved and the solutions available.
Current projects
everwave is currently active not only in Thailand and Cambodia, but also within Europe.
In Kukës, Albania, everwave is building a long-term clean-up mission through a combination of innovative technology and local collaboration. The region suffers from severe plastic and waste pollution, exacerbated by inadequate waste management systems, illegal dumping sites, and growing consumer behaviour. With a waste collection boat and a mobile sorting container prototype, the affected waterways can be effectively cleared of waste.
