Sheep wool

Schafschurwolle

Sheep’s wool is a natural, biodegradable animal fibre with temperature-regulating properties. Sourced from certified organic livestock farming, it is produced using animal-friendly husbandry practices and gentle processing methods – making it ideal for durable products made from natural raw materials.

What is sheep's wool?

Sheep's wool is a natural animal fibre obtained from the fleece of sheep. It is soft, temperature-regulating, and has excellent moisture-wicking properties.

It is used in clothing, bedding, upholstery, and insulation materials, among other applications. Wool is a renewable raw material, biodegradable, and one of the oldest fibre materials used by humans.

How is sheep's wool produced?

Sheep are typically shorn once a year. The raw wool is then cleaned, sorted, and mechanically processed – for example by combing, spinning, or quilting. Particularly high quality is wool from certified organic animal husbandry (kbT), which ensures species-appropriate keeping, organically grown feed, and the avoidance of harmful chemicals.

Environmental profile of sheep's wool

Sheep's wool is a renewable raw material that can be produced locally and processed with comparatively low energy input – particularly when it comes from certified organic farms (kbT).

1. Raw material sourcing

In certified organic animal husbandry (kbT), animals live on pastures, receive exclusively organic feed, and are kept in species-appropriate conditions. Mulesing and the use of pesticides are prohibited.

2. Processing and energy input

The cleaning and processing of wool is mostly mechanical and involves minimal use of chemicals. Regional supply chains help shorten transport distances and reduce emissions.

Thanks to its high insulating capacity, wool is particularly well suited to long-lasting products – from bedding through to insulation materials.

3. Durability

Wool is naturally hard-wearing and dimensionally stable. It retains its structure for many years and refreshes with simple airing – ideal for long-lasting products.

4. Reusability

Wool can be reused as filling material, insulation, or in recycled textiles. Used wool products can often be repaired or reworked as well.

5. Biodegradability

Pure shorn wool is compostable and breaks down completely under natural conditions – without leaving behind microplastics or pollutants.

A note on criticism

Despite its positive properties, sheep's wool is not without criticism. Conventional animal husbandry can involve poor keeping conditions, long transport distances, or the controversial practice of mulesing – a painful procedure used primarily in Australia. In addition, the cleaning of raw wool is often water- and energy-intensive when not carried out to ecological standards.

This makes it all the more important to choose sheep's wool from certified organic animal husbandry (kbT). This ensures species-appropriate keeping, mulesing-free practices, and careful processing throughout.

Sheep's wool at ekomia

At ekomia, we use sheep's wool from certified organic animal husbandry (kbT) wherever possible. The sheep live in species-appropriate conditions on pastures, free from genetic modification, pesticides, and unnecessary medication.

For our mattress covers, our sheep's wool comes from France – otherwise predominantly from Europe – and is processed within the EU. This ensures short transport distances and controlled conditions throughout the entire supply chain.

Sheep's wool provides natural comfort in our products: breathable, temperature-regulating, and based on natural raw materials – ideal as natural padding in our mattress covers for a dry, balanced sleeping climate.

Questions & answers for Sheep wool

Here we answer some questions about Sheep wool that are frequently asked by other users.

Sheep's wool is obtained by shearing the sheep, usually once a year. The raw wool is then washed, sorted, and mechanically processed, e.g., combed, spun, or quilted.

Sheep wool products should be washed as infrequently as possible, but aired regularly – this is often enough to freshen them up. If washing is necessary:

  • Hand wash only or use the wool cycle.
  • Cold to lukewarm water (max. 30°C).
  • Use a special wool detergent without enzymes.
  • Do not wring or rub.
  • Dry flat, away from direct sunlight or heating.

The prices for sheep's wool vary greatly depending on origin, quality, and processing. Raw wool from sheep can be purchased for as little as €1–3 per kilo, but often requires extensive cleaning. High-quality, cleaned, and processed organic wool costs between €10 and €40 per kilo, depending on its use (e.g., filling wool, felting wool, yarn). Animal welfare, regional sourcing and kbT certification all affect the price – but in return, you get a durable, natural product

kbT stands for controlled organic animal husbandry. Sheep wool from kbT comes from animals that are kept in a species-appropriate manner: with plenty of space to roam on pastures, organic feed, no pesticides, genetic engineering, or painful mulesing. The shearing process is also carried out gently, and the processing of the wool is subject to the strict criteria of kbT certification. kbT wool is therefore clearly defined: mulesing-free, pesticide-free and sourced from animals kept in a manner appropriate to their species.
