Solid wood

Beech

Buchenholz

Beechwood is a fine-grained, versatile hardwood with a high strength. It has an attractive smooth surface and even texture and is ideal for furniture, interior design and everyday objects. The colour palette ranges from light yellow to reddish brown and creates a bright, friendly room effect.

What does beech wood look like?

Beech wood is defined by a fine, even grain and a smooth, calm surface. Its natural colour ranges from pale beige to a warm, reddish brown. The homogeneous structure with no prominent knots is a hallmark of the species.

As beech is a natural material, the appearance can vary. With solid wood in particular, individual pieces may differ slightly in colour and grain.

Unlike heartwood beech, standard beech selects younger trees with a calmer, lighter grain – resulting in a more uniform and composed overall appearance.

How is beech wood finished?

Beech wood is commonly oiled, waxed, or lacquered. Treatment with a clear furniture oil is especially popular, as it enhances the natural colour while keeping the surface breathable.

A lacquer forms a protective seal on the wood surface, while an oiled finish leaves the pores open – allowing the wood to continue absorbing and releasing moisture. Oiled beech is slightly more susceptible to signs of wear than lacquered surfaces, but it is easy to clean and can be re-oiled whenever needed. Scratches and stains are simpler to remove over time. Plant-based furniture oil is also a low-maintenance choice – its formulation is predominantly based on plant-derived ingredients.

Environmental profile of beech wood

Beech wood is a local, renewable resource and one of the most widely certified timber species in Europe. Its high availability and short transport distances in Central Europe make it particularly resource-efficient.

1. Raw material sourcing

Beech is the most common broadleaf tree in German forests. Its responsible use is underpinned by certifications such as FSC and PEFC. These ensure controlled harvesting and the preservation of forest stocks.

2. Processing and energy input

Processing beech is comparatively energy-efficient. Thermal treatment (steaming) requires additional energy, but it improves dimensional stability. Overall energy consumption remains low relative to other materials.

Thanks to regional availability, the CO₂ footprint of beech wood can be kept low. Sourcing from local forestry minimises transport emissions.

3. Durability

Beech wood is hard and abrasion-resistant, though less weather-resistant than oak. Indoors, it stands out for its stability and load-bearing capacity – ideal for furniture, flooring, and staircases.

4. Reusability

Through recycling systems and bulky waste collection, beech wood is largely incinerated in biomass power plants. During combustion, the CO₂ that the tree previously absorbed from the atmosphere is released, generating energy in the process. From an ecological standpoint, however, the material's excellent repairability is the more compelling advantage. In furniture applications, beech can be glued, sanded, or re-oiled after damage or wear – restoring it to a like-new condition.

5. Biodegradability

Beech wood is a fully biodegradable natural material. Under natural conditions, it breaks down without residue and re-enters the nutrient cycle.

Questions & answers for Beech

Here we answer some questions about Beech that are frequently asked by other users.

Beech is native to large parts of Europe and grows primarily in temperate climate zones. In Germany, it is one of the most common broadleaf tree species and a central component of FSC- or PEFC-certified forestry. The European beech prefers nutrient-rich, moist sites at hilly and mid-range elevations. Thanks to its wide availability and short transport distances, beech wood contributes to a compact supply chain and low transport overhead.

In furniture making, the native European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the predominant choice. Widely distributed across Europe, it stands out for its even structure, high strength, and excellent workability. A particularly notable variant is steamed beech – a specialised heat treatment gives the wood a richer, reddish tone and improves its dimensional stability. Heartwood beech is another option, where the naturally varied colouration of the heartwood is deliberately showcased, resulting in a more lively, rustic appearance. All beech wood variants are known for their versatility and wide availability from certified forestry.

Beech wood ranks among the more moderately priced hardwoods and offers an excellent price-to-performance ratio. Compared to oak or walnut, beech is usually significantly more affordable without any compromise in quality. The price depends on factors such as origin, processing (e.g. steamed or heartwood beech) and grading. In furniture making in particular, beech is a popular choice for durable, stable pieces at an accessible price – regionally available and from certified forestry.

Beech wood has a light, warm radiance with a slightly reddish undertone – especially when it is steamed. To show it off to its best advantage, neutral and muted wall colours are particularly suitable. White, cream, light grey or sand tones emphasise the natural lightness of the wood. If you like contrasts, you can choose cool colours such as sage green, petrol or dark blue – they bring out the warmth of the beech particularly well.
