Futon beds made of solid wood

Futon beds are characterised by their height close to the floor. Made of solid wood, our beds bring together Japanese flair and natural durability. Curious what is important when buying a futon bed? Then read on.

What is a futon bed actually?

A futon bed is a low bed. Often the frame height does not even crack the 30 cm. The "lowering" of the bed frame is based on the Japanese model. This looks chic and blends perfectly into minimalist room concepts.

The Japanese sleep culture: The origin of the futon bed

The futon bed has its origin in Japan. Especially the concept of sleeping close to the floor is popular and widespread there. The spiritual background: Through the closeness to the ground, the closeness to the earth and finally to nature can be felt. This is desirable from the perspective of Shintoism - the original Japanese religion. There the worship of nature is of great importance.

In Japan, to avoid lying on the hard floor, people reach for a low underlay, reminiscent of a mattress, and a blanket. The wafer-thin bed pads (Japanese: shiki buton) usually have a cotton filling. The blanket (Japanese: Kake-Buton) is also usually made of cotton. At the bottom is a rice straw mat, also known in this country as tatami.

Bed vs. futon bed: These are the differences

A futon bed is the European interpretation of the Japanese sleeping place. It combines sleeping comfort with a design that is close to the floor. Included are a low bed frame, slatted frame and mattress. It stands mostly above the bed frame. This gives the overall bed appearance a noble touch.

What you often look for in vain is the headboard: many bed models in futon look only have the characteristic frame. This directs the eye to the minimalist exterior. Another advantage: such low beds without headboard fit perfectly under roof slopes - even if the roof is particularly low.

Want to benefit even more? Futon beds take up very little space optically. So they are not too present even in the contemplative bedroom. At the same time they open up a wide range of possibilities for interior design.

What do I have to consider with solid wood futon beds?

Solid wood beds close to the floor are long-lasting companions. If you treat them with care, they will accompany you for several decades. A good reason to take a closer look at futon beds before you buy them.

For whom are futon beds suitable?

A bed close to the floor is a special eye-catcher and the right purchase for all those who value a design-oriented bedroom. Those who live in the attic also benefit - for the reasons mentioned above - from a futon bed.

But watch out: Due to the low height futon beds are not exactly known for their comfort. Because when you get up in the morning, you don't just get out of bed. Rather, you actually have to lift yourself up from around 30 cm above the floor.

Very few senior citizens get along well with futon beds. Especially for the older generation, beds in so-called comfort height are recommended. They are often up to 50 cm from the floor, making it easier to get up.

You have grown especially tall? Then it's worth taking a look at wooden beds in special length. Since recently we also offer bed sides in 220 cm length. So you can literally make yourself long and sleep relaxed.

Mattresses and slatted frames of a futon bed

Special mattresses and slatted frames are not necessary for a futon bed. As the beds are designed for use in local areas, conventional accessories also fit into the bed. When choosing a mattress, just make sure that it does not have XXL padding.

Due to the narrow frame, the insertion depth is not particularly large and the mattress stands out disproportionately far from the bed frame. How do you calculate the height that your mattress overlaps? With this rule of thumb:

Height of slatted frame + height of mattress - insertion depth = mattress overhang

Good to know: Japanese futon mattresses are usually much harder than normal Natural mattresses.
